My 2 Year or so Cycle

2008 - 2010
2006 - 2008

2003- 2006

It's kind of funny.  I've recently noticed that my attention span for different artistic endeavors last approximately 2 years.  So here's the progression since I started selling my art in eBay in 2003.  I first started with painted stones and after 2 1/2 years I got a little tired of contorting animals on to rocks.  I next started painting on canvas. I had painted before. But I mostly painted marine mammals. This was kind of exciting and taught me a lot.  I tried for the longest time to do a painting a day. I think it really honed my skills. Although, I rarely painted more than 5 miniature paintings a week.   I have a lot still to learn. In February of 2008 I was doing some research for a painting when I ran across needle felted animals. I had to give it a try. Now two years later, I'm in kind of a creative slump.  I hope that it's not yet another 2 year thing. The one constant throughout my art career has been that I donate a portion of my sales and that my focus is mainly on animals.

You're so talented Robin! I didn't realize you were a painter as well. They're wonderful. And I adore your needle felted animals - I think they are the best I've seen, and I hope you continue with them.
But I can totally relate to your 2 year cycle. I tend to get completely obsessed with some new interest and want to learn all there is to learn about it and try to become better and better at it, and then one day...I'm just done, bored or whatever.
I really hope that doesn't happen with my miniature animals, but it has been just about 2 years now so we'll see, lol.
For the sake of the animals, lets hope we can both continue our art for a very long time. :)
Hey, Robin, what about sculpting animals (from clay) - you're really good at it.

I can relate to your two year cycles - I have a similar saga of changing enthusiasms, but mine are in craft work.
Your art is brilliant!! I just love the needle felted creatures!

It must be a trend with amazingly talented artist, like ourselves :) I usually get stuck on a "look" or subject matter. In college I only made art with chickens for like 2 years. It let me explore different mediums & techniques without having to do that pesky "thinking of a concept". I've been doing fish for a while, but am finally moving on!!! You've find something that inspires you & you'll come out of your slump!!

Such talent....in all formats! I think that creative people do find themselves looking for the next adventure. It's like you master one type of art, then want to move on and try something else. We tend to get bored easily too, and when that happens, our art becomes a job and we simply don't enjoy it as much. You have such talent that you will do well, regardless of the medium. Good luck!

Robin I think many creative people go through changes like this until they find their niche. I have drawn, painted and illustrated with pen and ink, sewn everything from kids clothes to ball gowns, made millinery, bridal veils and jewellery, dabbled in floral art and quilting...but along the way I have learned that every experience has always stood me in good stead.

In 1996 I began sewing bears and now I combine all those experiences in my teddy bear artistry. Now I have found my niche I just can't imagine doing anything else...I love what I do and like you I also love helping the animals (in my case bears).

You are a talented artist and I am sure you will eventually find just the right thing that will allow you to utilise all you have learned along the way too. Stay positive and just keep creating!

Warmest Hugs,
Sandi @ Bearly Sane

I love all your work. Everything your 2 year cycles has given you is fantastic. I do love your felted animals, they are so realistic and lifelike. I hope this is where you stay for the sake of felting. But whatever the endeavor I am sure it will be highly prized.

Thanks everyone for the compliments and kind words of encouragement. I think I'm going to try a mixture of polymer and felting next. I have an idea for a standing grizzly with a polymer mouth inset and polymer nose and claws. I'm working on a native man to go with it now. We'll see how they turn out.
